Bulldog Drummond at Bay: Movie Review
Last year I purchased 7 of the Bulldog Drummond B movies from the 1930's and they are quite entertaining if you like 1930's movies as I do. In the series of films I have Captain "Bulldog" Drummond has bee played by actors Ray Milland in one, and John Howard in the rest. But Buldog Drummond at Bay has yet a third actor, John Lodge playing the title role.
While I prefer John Howard, John Lodge does a very good job in this adventure. Some sinister foreign spies have kidnapped an inventor and are trying to pry the secret behind his new aircraft from him. During the kidnapping the spies accidentally encounter Drummond and raise his suspicions which is what gets him involved.
This movie feels a bit more serial-like than the other movies but it is a pretty decent adventure yarn.
The DVD by Alph Video, is unrestored but the print is fairly clear. That is about par for the course for these old B movies as nobody has the money to do a full digital restoration on a movie that will only sell a bargain bin prices. There are a few rough spots where the film print has had to be spliced together to eliminate damage, however this does not effect your ability to watch or follow the plot.
All the Bulldog Drummond films are fun. He was sort of the James Bond of the 1920's and 1930's with many different actors in the role. If you like old movies and action/adventure movies usually with a espionage theme then these are worth collecting.
